A new work by the artist Dan Hays has been added to his exhibition The Walk to the Paradise Garden currently showing at Broadway Gallery Letchworth.
Titled Daisyworld, the painting is inspired by the work of Letchworth-born scientist James Lovelock. Daisyworld is the name of a computer model that Lovelock developed to illustrate Gaia theory, his influential hypothesis that the Earth and its natural cycles are like that of a living organism.
The computer model is based on an imaginary world populated by only two life forms: black daisies and white daisies. Hays' painting subtly embeds the flower motif into a view of Letchworth located near Norton Common which Lovelock's childhood home overlooked.
Broadway Gallery Curator Laura Dennis commented: “The Garden City has proved to be such an inspiration for the artist that he has continued to create new paintings of the town during the course of his solo exhibition. Alongside Dan's other paintings of Letchworth, Daisyworld brings to light another fascinating aspect of the town's history.”
The prize-winning artist will give an illustrated talk at the Gallery on Saturday 29 April where he will introduce his work and discuss the inspiration behind his new series of Letchworth paintings. The event will include a Champagne reception and private view of the exhibition.
