Mick Johal, a Governor of the Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation, has been presented with the prestigious Grass Roots Excellence Award by High Sheriff, Annie Brewster JP, at a ceremony held at Emil Dale Academy on 12th February. The award was given in recognition of Mick’s outstanding contribution to grassroots sports particularly in providing young people with opportunities to engage in rugby and other sports.
High Sheriff Annie Brewster JP said “As a former international athlete and having served as a long-standing member of the Herts Sport & Physical Activity Partnership Board, I am truly humbled to present Mick Johal with the Grass Roots Excellence Award. Mick's dedication to grassroots sports in Letchworth and the surrounding areas is nothing short of extraordinary. As the founder of the North Herts Crusaders RLFC and a Governor for Sporting Activities at the Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation, Mick has devoted his life to creating opportunities for young people to engage in sports, with a particular focus on rugby. His leadership has been instrumental in expanding sports offerings in our community, and the impact of his efforts is immeasurable. Mick’s commitment to fostering a love for sports, developing youth talent, and promoting inclusion has made a lasting difference in the lives of many. His work truly embodies the essence of "Sport for Good," and it is an honour to recognize him for his tireless contributions.”

Mick, known for his modest and understated nature, has made an immense difference to the lives of young athletes across Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire. Judges praised Mick’s exceptional commitment to introducing young people to rugby, especially in Letchworth Garden City, where his work has had a profound impact on the local community.
In 2012, Mick founded the North Herts Crusaders RLFC in Letchworth, marking the introduction of Rugby League to the town. In their debut season, the Crusaders entered the East of England League and achieved a remarkable victory, winning the Grand Final. The team went on to secure an undefeated second season, capturing both the cup and the league title.
Under Mick’s leadership, the Crusaders have gone from strength to strength, now competing at level 4 in the Southern Conference League. The club has expanded to include two open-age rugby league teams and a thriving junior programme, creating new pathways for players of all ages. Mick has also expanded the club’s sports offerings to include netball, with four senior netball teams now competing. The Crusaders have become one of the largest and fastest-growing sports clubs in North Hertfordshire, thanks to Mick’s dedication to fostering diverse sports opportunities for the community.
In 2023, Mick was appointed Governor for Sporting Activities at the Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation. In this role, Mick has been a tireless advocate for increasing sports participation across Letchworth, with a special focus on engaging under-represented groups and enhancing sports facilities for young people. His work continues to inspire young athletes, creating inclusive and community-focused programmes that leave a lasting impact on the region.
Mick Johal’s unwavering dedication to grassroots sports has changed the landscape of sporting opportunities in Letchworth Garden City and beyond. Mick has also been advocating strongly for improved sports facilities in the town as well as increased participation. Through his leadership and passion, he has inspired countless young athletes, making a tangible difference in the lives of many.
