The British Asian Rugby Awards took place at the Palace of Westminster in November. We’re delighted to say that Heritage Foundation Governor, Mick Johal, was the winner of the Grass Roots Excellence award. Judges praised Mick’s commitment to introducing young people to rugby across Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire, but especially in Letchworth Garden City.
In 2012 Mick founded the North Herts Crusaders RLFC in Letchworth Garden City, introducing Rugby League to the town. In their debut season, the Crusaders entered the East of England League and won the Grand Final. In their second season, the team went undefeated, capturing both the cup and the league title . Under Mick’s leadership, the North Herts Crusaders have continued to thrive, now competing at level 4 in the Southern Conference League. The club has grown to include two open-age rugby league teams and a thriving junior programme, creating new pathways for players of all ages. Mick’s influence extends beyond rugby, as he has expanded the Crusaders’ sports offerings to include netball, now fielding four senior netball teams. This makes the Crusaders one of the largest and fastest-growing sports clubs in North Hertfordshire, showcasing Mick’s dedication to fostering diverse sports opportunities for the community.
In 2023, Mick was appointed Governor for Sporting Activities for the Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation. In this role, he is committed to increasing sports participation across Letchworth, with a special focus on engaging under-represented groups and enhancing sports facilities for young people. Through his tireless efforts, Mick Johal has become a driving force for grassroots sports, inspiring young athletes and creating inclusive, community-focused programmes that make a lasting impact on the region.
Congratulations Mick!
