The Broadway Gallery has launched a rug design competition in celebration of its current exhibition, Allistair Covell: Canvas to Carpet.
Using Allistair’s exhibition as inspiration, entrants are invited to create their own canvas design, with the winning entry being transformed into a rug by Rug Maker’s weavers in Nepal.
The hand-woven rug will measure 1m x 1m square and will be placed on public display at Letchworth's new tourist information destination, Discover Letchworth which opens this June, before being awarded to the winning designer.
Aaron Raw, Visitor Services Manager at Broadway Gallery, said: “The competition presents visitors with a fantastic opportunity to engage directly with the works on display and experience first-hand the creative journey that is explored throughout the exhibition. Visitors to Discover Letchworth will be able to see this dialogue reflected in a custom-made work, in a setting that celebrates the unique cultural and artistic heritage of the world’s first garden city.”
The competition is open to all, whether from an artistic background or not. Entries can be created from a variety of materials, including clay, paint or collage, however entrants must not use more than six colours.
