Vicky Axell, Learning & Engagement Manager
"I work with children at local schools to bring Letchworth’s history to life. Hidden Histories is one project that is part of our cultural learning programme, which launched in 2019. Funded by ShareEast, it was set up to commemorate the working men and women who came to the town and helped build its communities.
Along with our colleagues from the Garden City Collection, we held workshops in our museum space where we engaged children with the story of their homes, in some cases being able to look at the original plans of their house. It was wonderful to see how children enjoyed learning about early Letchworth settlers who may have lived in their house – women and men who came to the town to help build our community. Families attending the event and uncovering interesting stories were given a blue vinyl plaque which they can display in the window of their home.
Understanding that Letchworth is unique makes children feel special and helps build civic pride. It’s great way to nurture confidence while celebrating local history. The teachers seem to like it too as it supports their own learning objectives."
