On Saturday 6 July Active Letchworth celebrated ‘Have a Field Day’ in Radwell Meadows on the Greenway. Active Letchworth teamed up with Transition Town Letchworth to put on an event encouraging people to get active in our local green spaces whilst taking care of our outside playground.
Have a Field Day is a national campaign organised by conservation charity Fields in Trust to motivate people out into our parks to make the most of the natural environment around us.
The Letchworth Greenway is the perfect place to get active and enjoy nature and Radwell Meadows was chosen as the focus of the event with its popular willow sculptures.
The day included field games, a yoga session with an expert instructor and fun activities including a bug search, tree spotting, information on sustainability, crafts, natural arts, a plastic free picnic and storytelling with the Wind in the Willows team who will be featuring at Broadway Theatre this Christmas. The day finished off with a group litter pick around the meadow, to combat the problem that we still have with littering, highlight what can be recycled and help inform how we can reduce waste.
The plastic free picnic was a key part of the event as we spend so much time out in parks eating al fresco at this time of year, but it does sadly have an impact on the amount of litter that is left behind. Plastic Free Letchworth shared lots of ideas on how to reduce plastic and some of our tips.
If you haven’t been along to Radwell Meadows, it is a beautiful spot for a picnic with trails for walks and a big open space for games, not to mention the stunning Wind in the Willows themed sculptures.
