This month I had my first volunteering session with Give Something Back at Refugio a Community café with extra halls for music groups, events and food kitchens. Here my mentor Max got me involved in talking to some people studying in Germany who were able to help me add to my German vocab. Unfortunately Max is travelling to London in October to complete an MA so a new coordinator will be needed.
Another event supported by Give Something Back was the East Side Music Day and to get there we passed the largest remains of the wall. All of the parts had brilliant pieces of art on them each by a different person; it was really amazing what had been done to preserve history but also to create something new. We made our way to the main stage located near the river and of course it started to rain. Luckily we had our long raincoats so this did not put a damper on the music. We saw an incredible unique singer who had made an outfit with light up panels which could be hit to provide many different drum effects. There was also a wonderful acoustic guitar player and the band I liked the best made up of a double bass, violin, drum, cool guitar thing and what I thought was a bansuri or bamboo flute. It was really cool.
My top tips:
- Buy a weekly or monthly travel pass but remember to buy a bike ticket if you need one
- The French church does free concerts
- The cheapest Hot chocolate in Berlin at 50 cents belongs to the Willy Brandt museum near to Brandenburg gate
Until next time, Immy
